In a recent news article in Associated Press entitled
Indiana Boy Abducted In '94 Found, Ken Kusmer informs his readers of a young boy who has recently been found after nearly two decades of being missing.
In July 2004, a young child was abducted by his grandparents in Indiana. According to authorities, the boy had lived with his grandparents since birth, but when his mother filed for custody, his grandparents took him and left, upset about the custody arrangements. John R. Russell, a road deputy for the LaGrange County Sheriff's Department who investigated the disappearance stated that it is "not sure that [the grandparents] ever had legal custody." Apparently, the grandparents attempted to receive legal custody and when that didn't pull through, they immediately ran off with the child. Though at first the abduction was only considered a misdemeanor, it later became a felony.
Richard Wayne Landers Jr., the boy who was abducted many years ago, now goes by the name Michael Jeff Landers. He is currently living in a small town in Minnesota, not too far from his grandparents, who have also taken on different names, Raymond and Susan Iddings. Officials have said that, "Raymond Michael Iddings and Susan Kay Iddings verified Landers' identity." Back in 2008, the charges towards the grandparents were dismissed because the case went cold. Currently, the grandparents may face federal charges in the case.
Lisa Harter, the mother of Michael Landers, is "the happiest woman on earth," according to her husband, Richard Harter. He spoke with Associated Press and admitted that his wife and him had been working with an attorney to help find his stepson. Police, on the other hand, have confirmed that Michael Landers is currently expecting his first child and does not seem to have experienced any sort of abuse during his abduction.
This proved an interesting article to read, as it's always great to hear about finding a missing child, especially after several years of searching. What I found to be rather different in this story was that the victim was abducted by his own grandparents and did not seem to experience any sort of abuse during his time with them.
In this case, the abducted victim was found unharmed and living a normal life, though that is not usually the outcome in most cases. Although it took several years of persistent searching, Michael was eventually found safe. Fortunately, the search for Michael Landers has finally come to an end and his parents can now rest, as well as the investigators.
