In a recent news article in MSN News entitled
New Mexico Girl Found Locked In Cage, Russell Contreras informs his readers of a young girl who was found recently locked in a wooden crate by two adults.
According to Las Cruces police, Patriarchias, the woman responsible for the act, and her boyfriend, Edmond Gonzales, "left the girl in the cage while they took her three children to an elementary school." Apparently, Patriarchias was not worried about the girl, saying that she would not be gone long. Instead of only leaving her at home, she decided to lock her up in a wooden crate.
When officers later stopped by to the mobile home, they discovered the girl trapped. Police stated, "the cage had two latches on the door... and was about 2.5 feet wide and 4 feet tall." Not only is a cage inappropriate for a child to be in, but the measurements are inhumane. The parents have been charged with child negligence.
The little girl, whose name has not been given out, suffers from a disability. According to the police, "the girl suffers from microcephaly." This condition causes people to have an abnormally small head. It makes it rather interesting to learn she has the disability and her being the child left in the cage, rather than Patriarchias' other children.
This article interested me, as well as angered me. The fact that someone can simply lock a small child up in a cage, as if they were not a human being, astonishes me. Also, I cannot help but wonder if the other children living with this couple have been taken away by officials as well, for they should be under the supervision of these terrible, sick minded people.
Luckily for the young girl, she was found alive and well. Although a bad situation, there is always some good found in everything. The girl was found early on and the adults responsible are now under watch and also have a $25,000 cash only bond. The bad news is that Patriarchias has been released, though hopefully her other children have been taken into child services as well.
